Aikido Class Descriptions
Gendai Aikido is a modern approach to Traditional Aikido. In Japanese the word for modern
is “Gendai”. The Gendai approach to the Martial Art based on circles is more of a straight
forward one. In Traditional Aikido you redirect or throw the uke/attacker. This is a good start
but is very open ended because it allows the attacker to get back up and try again. Only this
time his anger level has increased drastically. In Gendai Aikido when you are confronted with
an attacker you not only throw the attacker down you immediately follow up with a submission
move or a lock on the ground/mat. This will make the attacker a little more reluctant or unable
to try you again.

"My name is Jesse Arnold, and I have trained in Martial Arts for over 14 years and have taught
for more than 10 years. I received training from an MYB (Midori Yama Budokai) school. I have
taught men, women, children, and have also given private lessons to police officers and
Marines. I have training in Aikido, Karate, Ju-Jitsu, and Tae Kwon Do. These Martial Arts have
influenced me to form a more street practical version of Aikido, Gendai Aikido. I completely
respect the traditional version of Aikido; without it I wouldn’t have the solid foundation I have
today. Traditional Aikido is a beautiful Martial Art, but that’s exactly what it is an “art”. It has the
potential to be so much more. Gendai Aikido is the potential unlocked."
